There’s nothing better than watching enthusiastic, unapologetic, creative nerds do what they do best – make and talk about cool stuff. Plus, going down a YouTube wormhole of three hours of binging is one of the best ways to spend an uneventful evening. So, if you’re anything like me, you’ll love Tested.
Ex-Mythbusters host, Adam Savage, helms Tested, a YouTube channel (and website) dedicated to exploring anything in science, technology and pop-culture. Tested has covered a lot of stuff, so I’ve decided to make a small list of recommended viewings for anyone interested. Most of these recommendations are from this year, but it’s worth going through their back-catalog and checking out their various playlists.
Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Custom NERF Rifle
One Day Builds is one of my favourite series on Tested. Adam takes to his workshop to, as you may have guessed it, try to build something in a day. This video from Feb 2017 shows Adam disassembling a NERF Rifle to paint, weather, and customise for a Secret Santa gift.
Adam Savage Builds the LEGO NASA Apollo Saturn V!
The guys at Tested are unashamedly huge LEGO fans. In this video from June 2017, Adam, Norm and Will split up a giant Saturn V Rocket LEGO kit and try to build it as fast as possible. It’ll make you both insanely envious, and realise how satisfying the process of ‘knolling’ is.
Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project
Alongside their other videos, Tested also has podcasts to put to your ears. Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project is one of them. It generally features Adam, Norm and Will, but often has plenty of guests on the show. Each episode is a nice 30 minutes and they talk about films, TV, making, their adventures and life in general. The podcasts are also available on iTunes or wherever you normally listen. If you’re looking for more, also check out This Is Not A Test or look at the Tested site for more info.
Adam Savage Incognito at Comic-Con 2015 (with Astronaut Chris Hadfield!)
Adam Savage is famous for his cosplaying. Every year at Comic Con, he walks the floor disguised in a costume of his own design and sees how long it takes for someone to realise it’s him. Notable examples are Totoro, Chewbacca and Judge Dredd. In this video from 2015, Adam and legit spaceman Chris Hadfield dress up as 2001: A Space Odyssey astronauts.
Adam Savage Examines the Props and Spacesuits of The Expanse!
I was a huge fan of Season 1 of Syfy’s The Expanse (I still need to catch up with Season 2). It is a visually stunning science-fiction show which I recommend to anyone looking for a new obsession. I’m also a huge fan of movie space-suits. Tested have a few videos collaborating with the guys behind The Expanse and Adam even cameos in Season 2!
